|Temperate basses are stream-lined silvery fishes, all but one species with dark horizontal stripes. They inhabit freshwater, brackish waters and marine waters. Some of the species are anadromous, meaning that they live in saltwater but spawn in freshwater. All species prefer to spawn upstream in rivers and tidal bayous where continuous moving waters occur. Because they can grow to large sizes, several species are used to stock lakes and reservoirs. Hybrid basses are produced in hatcheries and then stocked in the wild. Temperate basses are top predators in their environments and support a significant sport fishery and sometimes a commercial fishery.
