Distinguishing
Characteristics
Body elongate, slender, compressed laterally; color brown to shiny gray; fins blackish in large specimens, yellow with blackish tips in smaller specimens; pelvic fins small, may be absent in adults; finlets behind dorsal and anal fins; head somewhat elevated, lower jaw extends past upper jaw; upper jaw with 3-4 fangs followed by a row of canines; lower jaw with 2 fangs followed by canines; 1 spine on operculum; lateral line curves abruptly down over pectoral fin; no free spines in anal fin.
Similar Species
The Roudi escolar is distinguished from other snake mackerels by the absence of keels on the belly and caudal areas, no turbercles (body smooth), lateral line is single (not double), and the pelvic fin has 1 spine with 0-4 rays or is completely abscent.
