Neritidae, the nerites, are a family of small snails that may live in fresh, brackish and marine waters. Their shells are nearly tear-drop shaped, thick and often have beautiful and attractive color patterns. Their diet is mainly algae which they scrape off surfaces of plants and other objects. They are usually found clinging to rocks or marsh grasses in the high tide zones. There are 5 species found in Texas.
